Consider the Gospel

Why doesn't God fix or get rid of the corruption in the world?

Ragnar Oborn

When you think that God is all powerful then he can do anything. So why does he not just end the corruption so that there is no more disease, earthquakes, tsunamis and other awful things?

The problem is that not only is the corruption out there in the world (so that death and awful things happen) but it is in us even more. Jesus said, "For from within, out of the human heart, come evil ideas, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly. All these evils come from within and defile a person." (Mark 7:21-23).

So if God were to end corruption, he would have to end us. That is one way He could have done it, but that would have done us no good. The gospel is really about how God rescues us from our corruption and then ends it, so in a real sense it is about God fixing this corruption in the world, but He is starting with us.

And that gives us a clue to the meaning of Hell. There will come a day when God will end or banish all that is corrupt. And that includes people who chose to remain in corruption. I know many of us in the West today are almost indignant with the thought of God's judgment. But if you ever wished, in a moment of frustration, that God would straighten out this world, the Gospel declares that He will. We want him to just deal with the things that make us uncomfortable and the really 'bad' people. But He won't stop there. Everything and everyone will face His straightening eye.
