So if I want to accept the gospel, what do I do?
The simple answer is this: start talking to the thin air in front of you. Why? Because to accept the gospel means to do business with God Almighty, who is present as Jesus Christ in the thin air right in front of you. Jesus said, "I am with you always even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20). To accept the Gospel would mean to accept what Jesus said, And this statement cannot only have been to his immediate followers since it says, 'to the end of the age'. So the promise is that he is around and can hear you. So talk to him.
What should you say? There was a man named Paul in the Bible who was in the business of killing Jesus' followers. Jesus appeared to him out of the thin air one day. (It was a terrifying, visible phenomenon. Don't necessarily expect this for yourself – it's the exception rather than the rule. Jesus prefers to remain invisible in his ordinary dealings. See John 20:29) Paul and Jesus had some serious business to do, so pay close attention to what Paul said to Jesus (Acts 22:8-10). First, Paul asked, “Who are you, Lord?” Note first the Paul called Jesus Lord. What a loaded word! In saying that word, Paul was calling Jesus the boss, the owner of the universe, and because of that, the ruler of Paul’s own life. Paul didn’t have rights to his own life anymore.
Second, note that Paul asked who Jesus is. When we accept the gospel it means that, like Paul, we will spend the rest of our lives trying to learn more about who Jesus really is (Philippians 3:10).
After this, Paul asked another question: "What do you want me to do?" Then Jesus gave him some clear instructions of what he wanted him to do next. Paul lived the rest of his life motivated by the joy of knowing Christ had forgiven him.
If you want to accept the gospel, you might want to say something like this into the thin air in front of you, where the Lord Jesus is waiting, listening:
'Lord Jesus: I admit that you are the ruler of the universe, the owner of everything, and I invite you to be my ruler and owner now too, just like you deserve. I admit that I have acted as your enemy. Please forgive me for all my sins. I admit that there are so many ways I don’t know you. Please show me who you really are more and more for the rest of my life. Please use my life for your purposes. What do you want me to do today, or this week, to let you use me and shape me? Please guide me. Thank you so much for dying for me. Amen'
