Hu
Hu was a post-doctoral student at UNB. He has just returned to China to take up a professorship there. Before returning he shared this story of how he came to experience the Gospel.
Experiencing the Gospel necesitates that we ask, seek and knock. This story shows how asking and seeking brought an experience.
My name is Hu. I came to Canada for one-year post doctoral fellowship after I finished my Ph.D in Japan last October. I have couple of experiences to share with you before I leave UNB at the end of this September.
The first time that I was involved with God was when I was in my junior high school. There was a short story in my Chinese textbook written by O Henry-a famous short story writer. I still remembered the story although many years passed since I first read the story. The story was about a thief who had been stealing for majority of his life. But one day he was suddenly transformed by the hymn at the very moment when he was passing by a church. The picture in my mind was that a miserable man was touched and loved by God's magic hymn in the golden sunset and this image has remained inside me since then. There was no any access for more input for a student like myself from a very remote countryside in China. But the seed was planted in my heart.
Then I had a conference trip in Vienna and Rome last summer which watered the seed in my heart. I saw wonderful religious art works which drove me to know more about this God.
The chance where I could be touched by God and his Good News was when I came to Fredericton last October. The intention in my deep heart was to know anything about Jesus Christ. This made me take advantage of initiatives and opportunities that I could have. Chinese bible study on Thursdays, Sunday Schools, Alpha course, Sunday service in the New Brunswick Baptist church, sorts of retreat, talking to Christians, and so on, and on...
The thing that really amazed me was the first time that I became the witness of God's miracle. It happened during the Alpha retreat organized by the New Brunswick Baptist church last winter. Before the retreat, I was already used to keep praying everyday and I was no longer shy anymore to speak out my feeling about God. But I was still too shy to pray in front of people. The special atmosphere encouraged me to pray with some fellows for my father back in China. Actually, my father has had trouble with sleeping for a long time. But he refused to admit that he was sick and to go to a doctor. In order to bring my father to see a doctor, I had previously flown home from Japan to try to persuade him. Unfortunately, I could not persuade him. I never gave up doing the same work when I phoned him every week for couple of years. I was really depressed to believe my father would go to a doctor some day. The last thing I could do was to put my trust in Jesus Christ and pray for him. The miracle really happened when I phoned my father one week later after I prayed for him. My father finally went to a doctor and he became a Christian since then.
I would like to express my special thanks to my bible teacher-Sam Jess, the New Brunswick Baptist church, and all my Canadian friends like Bud&Andrew, Dale&Carrol, and Paul&Kei before I finish my story.
